Latest energy transition podcast argued that progress in solar is really remarkable and that given US nuclear industry is in shambles (recent scandals on new builds going WAY over budget) may mean that no nuclear is built as it's too financially / politically risky
-

-
Solar has indeed grown fast but is now only 1% of global energy. Wind is another 1%. I am very doubtful that they can reach 100 quickly enough. Hansen is right that claiming so probably causes more harm than good.
-
Indeed, can't reach 100 quickly enough. The problem is it's likely nothing can, we won't pro-actively cut demand or decarbonise energy, reverse land use emissions etc. in line with a +2 budget. Harm caused by perpetuating myth that 2 degrees is plausible within today's framework.

Indeed. We need lots of energy efficiency and all renewables. Something like this:https://www.ecofys.com/en/publications/energy-transition-within-15c/ …
-
You right!! I wld recommend farming agroecology and agroforestry best practices as well. They can spur carbon storage in the
#soil enhancing food security in the meantime. Farming is part of Climate solution! Let read the last#4pour1000 meeting outcomes https://www.som-management.org pic.twitter.com/cIwZBT4BHb - কথা-বার্তা শেষ

That’s idiotic hyperbole.
-
And I agree with Dr. Hansen 100%. Out ticket to oblivion is to put all our faith, and it is faith btw, into RE + batts.
-
His statement is wrong. I agree we should pursue nuclear, too, but him basically saying it’s impossible is actually false.
-
Not impossible perhaps, but most analysis of decarnonization scenarios shows that one restricted solely to RE is much more expensive, even if on assumes nuclear remains pricey.
-
More expensive, I agree, but the difference in cost is actually much less than it once was. The costs have changed, and it is important to update one's opinions to account for this. Additionally, the dishonest hyperbole of Hansen helps nothing.
-
I see updated models of these scenarios all the time. RE has a share and has grown but still need other techs. Even when we assume RE & storage very cheap. Still need nuclear & CCS which compete w/ea other.
-
Don’t need nuclear or CCS.
-
Offgrid can make it work entirely on renewables by oversizing them. Therefore the grid as a whole can do entirely renewables even easier due to geographic diversity. Other stuff can be synthesized. Worst case for airplanes is just to use hydrogen for jets, proven decades ago.

James Hansen's concerns are understandable but he needn't feel quite so pessimistic about energy technology. The US cut emissions by switching from coal to renewables plus
#natgas. Coal is no longer commercially viable against renewable energy. https://blog.gerbilnow.com/2018/06/three-eighths-of-coal-power-station.html …#innovation -
Most of the emissions reductions in the US from the coal to gas transition due to fracking-renewable’ impact as a share of this really fairly small.
-
Also it turns out leaking methane emissions from Natural Gas basically bring its total emissions up to as high or worse than coal.
-
Leaking methane emissions can be eliminated if fracking is replaced by natural gas manufactured from renewable-energy sourced hydrogen reacted with coal and other carbon-containing wastes (from crops, plastics, etc).https://blog.gerbilnow.com/2018/06/three-eighths-of-coal-power-station.html …
-
First of all if you're going to produce hydrogen nuclear reactors utilizing process heat are vastly better than trying to make it through renewables. Second of all there's no point in making natural gas because we shouldn't be burning it.
-
Then keep burning natural gas from fracking and wear the climate consequences of leaking methane. Renewable energy sources will generate electricity that exceeds demand. A waste of money to throw that away and build nuclear reactors for hydrogen instead.https://www.greentechmedia.com/articles/read/an-illustrated-guide-to-solar-curtailment-in-california#gs.9Pc5Xjw …
-
The idea is to stop burning natural gas altogether.
-
The idea is to stop burning natural gas altogther AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Some pathways to zero use take longer than others.
