One thing this story does depict is how new jails don't solve problems. They just mean more people in jail. The next step is to picture better resources for people as well as a better vision for what people (not the sheriff who can rent beds) want.

Also, jail is not a "detox" center. It's not a health care facility. I definitely agree with this sentiment.

The undersheriff provides an uncritical take on the "need for a new jail" which is based on inaccurate information. To wit, the proponent of the new jail WROTE THE REPORT. There's no realistic projection of jail trends nor the impact of community resources.

Rural sheriffs' offices in Maine will soon be doing more policing thanks to a shift in state priorities.

Without commenting on whether or not the NYPD pay should be increased, it's interesting to note how the police unions frame this as an "ordinary New Yorker" issue -- deriving strength from their worker status (even as they claim they are exceptional).

NYC made jail calls free. The rates are set arbitrarily, so there's really no need for them to cost people anything at all.

Note: Dallas jail charges $3.60 for a 15-minute call. The Commissioners set the rate and should make calls free.

Reasons why elections aren't enough. (Also why caucusing is such a terrible idea).

Iowa issues a lifetime voting ban for anyone who has been convicted of a felony. Just 4 percent of the state’s population is black, but they make up 26 percent of Iowa’s prison population. It gets worse. , with an important read before tonight.

as wrote last week, a big reason NY sheriffs are worrying out about this is that their jobs and prestige are on the line as jails empty. ()

It doesn't seem like cite and release if deputies have to call and vet with the DA's office.

and, as just wrote today in this WaPo piece, Iowa is kicking off teh election just as it has newly inherited the dubious title of being the only state that enforces a lifetime voting ban on anyone with a felony conviction.

Substance use issues are a public health crisis in Cobb County. It’s important to respond to this crisis with community-based treatment and diversion programs - not more incarceration.
