Tom Herbert likes moonshots and TLAs. First it was XDP and now it is BP4. BP4 is a DSL for programmable dataplanes and according to Tom it is inspired by best of eBPF and P4. Come to 0x14! listen, learn and engage

Before XDP, the most efficient solution to filter packets early on Linux (for example in case of DoS) was to use tc. I have recently been told that Netfilter can filter packets as early with "netdev" family (since Linux 4.2). See for an example.

If you build network equipment and software, you should play attention. Sometimes the algorithms are useful in general software contexts as well.

    Raw BTF sup (/sys/kernel/btf/vmlinux) added to pahole, make it default: $ pahole -C list_head struct list_head { struct list_head *next; /* 0 8 */ struct list_head *prev; /* 8 8 */ /* size: 16, cachelines: 1, members: 2 */ /* last cacheline: 16 bytes */ }; $

I wrote a short post on Linux's preemption models. It includes benchmark data that compares the various kernel config options.

Awesome talk on digging into micro-benchmarks with perf tool - what does perf report -g show by default and why is it not what you would expect? - what does asm volatile("": : :"memory") trick do? - why likely()/unlikely() annotations matter?
