My kid and two other students walked out of their rural, very conservative, public school for 17 minutes today. They were given two punishment options. They chose corporal punishment. This generation is not playing around. #walkout

If this is different from the normal punishment for cutting class, that's illegal, and you may want to consider contacting thr ACLU.

Students can be punished for walkouts since there is generally a punishment for skipping class. However, they cannot be punished more harshly for skipping class for a political reason the administration objects to.

Punishments for walkouts cannot be harsher than punishment for cutting class for any other reason. This has been established in court cases. More info about this if you search for ACLU info on students' rights.

I was a youth minister for 30 years and I never cease to be amazed at the strength, courage and leadership of young people and their infinite ability to make a positive difference. Thank you for sharing what these particular young leaders risked to be part of changing the world!

this is why the resistance needs to pay attention to every electoral body. everything from dog catcher to school boards on up need to be taken away from these freaks that don't believe in evolution but do believe in punishment for protest.

It could be an issue of supervision. If they don't have someone to watch him, the school is entirely accountable if he get into trouble or gets hurt.

I talked to the principle. It’s complicated and some miscommunication but at the end of the day those that chose not to ended up bullied and ridiculed by those who did. Hypocritical. I was civil when I called and resulted in my son getting called down to the office and chewed out

Each kid should have been allowed to make his/her own decision.

Parental notification would have been appropriate as well. Claims that this wasn’t political are ridiculous because almost every news story portrayed it this way.https://bangordailynews.com/2018/03/17/news/nation/a-student-was-suspended-after-staying-in-class-and-not-walking-out-heres-what-actually-happened/ …

Parental consent and notification should have been the first step. Provide parents with a breakdown of what they were planning and let families decide. I may have kept my child home that day. They are in the wrong.

Completely agree. That may be my letter to the superintendent, the lack of parental notification. The ability to discuss in advance what this means, what the options are, and what my kid’s thinking about the subject.

That is a perfect letter. Taking parents out of the loop on such an important topic ... the school missed a huge opportunity. Every kid is different, options should have been available to meet these needs.

These kids walked out in an act of NON-VIOLENT protest, and when they returned, were met with threats and violence. Despicable. Contact @ACLU They are collecting instances of such actions against students from their schools.
