But Texas also just reported a surge in available hospital beds. We had around 13,200 available yesterday, today, Texas says we have almost 18,000. No explanation yet from the state. Also now reporting 7,200 ventilators available (yesterday that number was 5,500).
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has said repeatedly that as the state re-opened more there would be increases. And his press office said earlier this week that we have the beds to cover any upticks "Every Texan who needs access to a hospital bed will have access to a hospital bed."
Thanks. Could you confirm where exactly these increases are coming from? Jails? Nursing homes? Or is it truly an effect of broad, no masking, too much socializing?
We don't have that data, sadly. Some counties have recently reported surge in positive cases related to prison (Medina Co., and Jefferson Co. examples.) But we don't have state data that shows hospitalizations broken down like other states have.
Took a look at some of the regional data. Houston still looks bad, Austin had a hospitalization spike (but I'm unsure of how many new hospitalizations). South Texas is spiking. Dallas and San Antonio relatively flat. I'm wondering if some of these are coming from Mexico.
Telling people that they will have access to a bed is laughable. Will they have a doctor, nurse or respiratory therapist? Will the non-covid patients have worse outcomes due to overburdening of the system? Simple bed numbers are not indicative of the severity of the situation.
You are absolutely correct. Hospitals already hurting from no elective surgery are not willing to hire more staff, especially nurses.
The Abbott/Patrick/Paxton plan is really cooking now. Good thing the gyms are open so pallbearers can pump up for the busy season ahead.
