AUWU national secretary Nijole Naujokas has written the most important article you will read on the Cashless Debit Card. If you are not thinking about actively organising against this card, by the time you finish this article you will be.

ultimately, the government doesn't care about the suffering it inflicts on poor people -- and for far too long, neither have we

-yes, the government knows robodebt is illegal -yes, the government knows its welfare programs are breaching human rights -yes, the government knows that it's starving & killing poor people The problem is we've taken too long to know & realise this

-teenage unemployment is hovering around 25% -youth underemployment is at its worst levels in 40 yrs -there’s so much important work (building homes, unfucking the environment) that ppl would love to do -so, if a job guarantee isn’t part of this Green New Deal i WILL scream

“The scandal of welfare cuts isn’t simply people are dying, it’s they’ve been dying for some time and nothing has been done about it. We pretend it’s normal. It isn’t. We tell ourselves it can’t happen in a country like ours. It can and it is.” >> My col.

Last time I did Work for the Dole at a Salvos (sorting dirty clothes for 40 cents/hr) was during the gay marriage plebiscite. They made ppl remove “YES” badges on site

On top of being a deeply homophobic organisation, the salvos exploit poor people through the Work for the Dole program to enrich themselves. In the bin!

The other immediate option of course is to request to change providers w/ the Department. I just did that & the three options they gave (close enough to me) were Sarina Russo, Salvos, & another MAX 🙃🙃🙃

Often unemployed workers are (justifiably) worried that going public with complaints with their job agency will cause them to face repercussions, it has been the complete opposite in my experience. Going public has allowed me to win most of the arguments I've had with my agency.

What to do if yr being bullied or coerced by yr job agency? 1) Make a complaint to the Department: 1800 805 260 2) Join & contact YOUR union: 3) Contact your local MP 4) Share your story online, in the media, any way you can: together we can expose this rort

when I reiterated that we have rights & she’s currently breaching them, she just stared at me like I was speaking another language, & continued coercing us to sign the forms. I eventually stormed out. I feel bad for the job seekers I left behind who probably did sign it

it’s a gruelling decision job seekers have to make: stand up to these bullies, enter a painful complaints process, risk losing yr payments — or, let them trample over yr lives & rights so they don’t threaten yr paltry income

I had this with Sarina Russo years ago. But they signed me up to a non existent training company. Where we sat in an empty warehouse 'working' with no tools no computers no anything

When you stand up for yr rights as a job seeker, it often turns into a farce. Me: im not signing this JSP: then you’ll be cut off Me: you can’t actually do that. I’m making a complaint to the Department Them: ok, but sign up for WFD in the meantime so we don’t have to cut you off
