This does not even approximate a refutation of the points made by @JeremyDuns. As a result, as Dr Bastani indicates, we shall have to wait.https://twitter.com/AaronBastani/status/1081121295008518146 …

Wait till you hear about these things called ‘anthropology’ and ‘ethnography’. The study was an exploratory ‘plausibility probe’ of pre-existing hypotheses. It did not aim at generalisable inferences. How familiar are you with social science research methodology?

What refutation? It was defended in a viva. Do you have the slightest idea what you are talking about? Have you read the 100,000 word document?

Aaron, I wouldn't waste your time. All this does is show you who to block. You might like to suggest they take it up with Royal Holloway if they are that concerned.

In which case I look forward to reading the detailed reply Royal Holloway will inevitably give you explaining their standards and processes. And then your fulsome apology to both RH and Aaron.

As you haven't even read the article - I said I had informed the university in it - that's a bold but rather empty prediction, Tom.

Not really. I would be amazed if, like any institution, RH didn't defend its staff to the death, regardless of the specifics. To say 'yeah, this PhD was shit' would undermine RH's wider programme and reputation so I expect they would defend themselves robustly.

          Replying to @Ruralmaestro @JeremyDuns and

That's not how academia works. They'll have their academic integrity/disciplinary panel look at the allegations, decide if they have merit - they absolutely do, then they'll probably put an academic from the field, either internal or external to review the allegations thoroughly.

          Replying to @jholyhead @Ruralmaestro and

They'll talk to the examiners, ask if these concerns were raised and appropriately addressed in the viva. If they were, case closed, if they weren't, they will ask the examiners if this new information would have materially altered their assessment of the work.

Most likely the examiner will quote TLC "it's not right, but it's OK" and the university will take no further action.
