A lot of people have asked how the National Guard came to dance the Macarena. It all began with Amisha Harding, a 41-year-old non-profit consultant and realtor in Atlanta, who's been coming downtown to protest every day for nearly a week now. This is her story:pic.twitter.com/9qkPqAmlYF

Last Sunday, she watched protesters yell at each other & the police lob tear gas. The people, she feared, could not sustain so much dark emotion. So on Monday, she and her cousin decided to bring a speaker and play disco, reggae & hip hop to try to foster a more positive mood.pic.twitter.com/Bcxpk7Qt8L

Protesters danced and the mood felt a bit less heavy. By Thursday, she spotted a few members of the National Guard tapping their feet. She coaxed them to come forward. “You know you want to dance,” she teased.

One or two of the troops broke formation to come forward. Then the major, then the general. Before long, more than a dozen men and women in camouflage were doing the electric slide, batons and assault rifles swinging to the beat.

On Friday, she got them to dance the Macarena. “It was so beautiful,” she said. “Protesters saw the humanity in them and they saw the humanity in the protesters. We created a place for unity.” She's seen the negative response on social media. This is what she thinks:pic.twitter.com/gpnnX3L603
