I feel like the small-brain take is "people are selling fanfic with the serial numbers filed off" & the galaxy-brain take is "a useful shortcut to being a romance novelist is, write a book, change the names to a top ship on AO3, then once you've grown an audience jump to amazon"

But I think you risk losing those tangential chapters 2/3rds through that completely stall the narrative. Aren't those like, essential to the genre?

can confirm, my favorite twilight fanfic as a young person was just modern cinderella AU, like one of those cinderella story movies

I read that trash years ago on adult http://fanfiction.net . it wasnt bad compared to the absolute garbage there. But, it was still awful and hasn't gotten any better now has the novels it's become.

Honestly I think a lot of people write fanfic because it gives them permission to write at all. We're told that only certain people can be "real" writers, and that trying to be a "real" writer when you're not is punished. Fanfic is an automatic "ha ha me? No!" that lets them try.
