The 1:1 interpretation of dark siders as "abusers" or "murderers" is only used to shame these specific kinds of stories though, to reframe female characters as irresponsible/stupid/crazy/deserving of violencehttps://twitter.com/TullySlim/status/1121336139204272131 …

I know this might not exactly be the topic, but i can't even think of a single female redemption arc. I've been sitting here for five minutes and nothing is coming to mind. It seems like it's mostly men who get redeemed.
-
This is Legends now, but Mara Jade had a redemption arc, and also fell in love with Luke, whom she had previously tried to kill. It's a story arc that's massively popular with male fans despite Luke falling for an abuser

-
Ugh I know this sounds really replyguy-y but wasn’t part of the strength of Mara’s redemption is that she was also another pawn and victim of Palpatine’s manipulation? Her finding purpose and good after being raised knowing only evil is not unlike Finn.
-
She was, but she also had a lengthy career of enforcing the Emperor’s will (read: killing for him), whereas Finn’s defining trait is that the FIRST time he was asked to kill for the First Order, he refused.
-
Well both where basically child soldiers and there’s always redemption to be found there.

Also, like, redemption is *by definition* not something that can be weighed and measured! Every dead person is a world lost. If someone really makes the effort to Do Better and make amends, that's really all one can ask. Evil can't be *undone*.
-
People are pulling for the entire damn hero cast of GoT to be "redeemed" and it contains attempted and *actual* child killers and leaders of armies that supply themselves by pillage and slaughter. Even lily-white Jon Snow has executed people, including a *teenager*.
-
Redemption isn't about balancing books, it's not an accounting. It's about change.
-
We only buy redemption and hero stories because they allow us to focus on the Bad Person Doing Better and not the weeping and traumatized families of their victims. Which is the whole point - to shift our perspective so that we can aspire to similar courage to change.
-
The most dangerous line in the journey of many villains, the moment they are truly and utterly lost, is by Macbeth: I am in blood Stepp'd in so far that, should I wade no more, Returning were as tedious as go o'er That's the actual moment of damnation.

This reminds me a lot of the people who lashed out at twilight on a conceptual level of “vampire aren’t romantic, they’re killers” - morally ambiguous or even nice vampires are fine until it’s attached to female fantasy, then the whole premise is deserving of scorn
-
Plus the implication that women attracted to vampires or Darth Vader or Phantom of the Opera or Batman or whatever are somehow not entirely cognisant of their dark dangerous cape energy? That they've gotta be reminded that they like a Bad Boy and that's Not Right?
-
SO much of backlash at various plots of "loving a monster"/"redemptive power of love", once it lands distinctly within the realm of a female fantasy, sounds so much like "but he's an ASSHOLE and I'm SUCH A NICE GUUUUYYYY".

this is the best take. men can run around in punisher t-shirts and be like "bo ho ho, it's dark and deep like that", but the moment a girl writes loki/oc fan fiction, she's fucking weird.

pretty cool jump from "Hey isn't it weird a bunch of men created a straw fangirl to mock and punish as commentary" to "I can't believe you idolize abuse, Jenny! Shame!!!!" Props to you for engaging with that in good faith cause it certainly doesn't deserve it :V

The woman didn’t want Vader to be redeemed She was in love with his evilness She revelled in his rage and daydreamed about being a Sith
-
Hmm...sounds like a lot of male fans...also sounds like those guys who want Kylo to stay evil, and think it may be really cool if Rey had turned dark too
