I’m going to take this opportunity to share a little bit of information about my favorite system, Kali. It’s a Filipino art. I trained (and hopefully will again soon) under Guro Dan Inosanto and his instructors. Here’s a nice video of him:https://youtu.be/O8aQK_ZTNqM
Kali is both an extremely practical and extremely beautiful art. A lot of law enforcement organizations use techniques and principles from it. Much of John Wick’s fighting style incorporates Kali and its sister arts: Jun Fan Gung Fu and Jeet Kun Do.
Side note: Jun Fan and Jeet Kun Do (and Muay Thai) are sister arts to Kali in the system I trained in because Guro Dan Inosanto trained closely with Bruce Lee (the founder of JKD) and incorporated his techniques into his system. (Sigung Lee learned Kali from Guro Dan.)
Guro Dan also trains Muay Thai with Ajarn Chai Sirisute. (I started out training under Ajarn Chai but because I moved to Salt Lake City I ended up training Muay Thai mostly under Sakasem Kanathawong.)
Anyway, to get back to my point here (pun!) Guro Dan is a very small older man. Watch how he moves in this video (start about 5 minutes in) https://youtu.be/tKKZuS8c7rM . He’s not swinging heavy swords around, hacking at things. He’s precise, fluid, efficient, and extremely effective.
Kali and sword arts that rely upon speed, precision, and mobility are EXCELLENT for smaller people, including women. And I’d put up a Kali master against just about anyone. (But I’m a bit prejudiced).
In case you can’t tell, I really miss training. My major post-tenure, post-book goal this year is to find a good instructor to train with again. (Hit me up if you know any of Guro Dan’s instructors in the metro KC area!)
His take is the dumbest take away from a show I a) haven’t seen and b) can also assume is just fine. What a fucking wet blanket.
Exactly. It's not even a hugely important part of the show, just a casual detail. I guess that's the most upsetting to a misogynist. You might like the show, btw. I do so far, except for a couple of scenes which are really upsetting to watch as a parent.
