Turns out, there's a cryptic perennial species complex within Mimulus guttatus- it's called Mimulus decorus. It's got a lot of issues making seeds with guttatus, but the extent + direction of hybrid seed inviability differs throughout the range of decorus!

So, we decided to leverage this diversity of reproductive isolation + test whether conflict over parental interests in resource allocation to developing seeds could be causing this barrier. Low and behold, we find support for this!

What's neat is that differences in the extent of parental conflict is usually associated with obvious mating system transitions (And that totally makes sense with theory!), but these guys are big, showy-flowered outcrossers- it's not a classic selfer/outcrosser comparison!

We think what might actually be happening is that differences in rates of clonal reproduction or historic bottlenecks might be driving variance in paternity, and that influences how much selection due to parental conflict there is.

It's such a cool system- I'm so excited to continue working on it! There's SO much to be done! Also, SO many people helped me with this. HUGE thanks to John, Maya, folks in Mim community, Matute lab +
@danielrmatute.@yanivbrandvain always has smart things to say about conflict!Prikaži ovu nit -
TLDR; parental conflict- it's a thing, + it could be driving hybrid seed inviability in a cryptic species complex within the guttatus species complex.
