As an undergrad in philosophy, I was mostly uninspired by my philosophy classes—found them sterile—but was enraptured by my philosophy-heavy psychology classes. I later realized it was because my phil profs were analytic philosophers & my psych profs were pragmatists.

Sehnsucht. Oh, and yes, nearly every time. But in a "I'm satisfied with life and super content with having this sort of longing with me" way.

"I know you from Twitter" - Embarrassing for everyone involved - Humiliating - Too online "Your reputation precedes you" - Cool and scary - Mysterious - Potentially ominous - Old-timey villian

The automobile dramatically changed everything about how society is structured and how we live in just a couple abrupt decades (including the invention of the suburbs). Is there any country or culture more car-centric than the US?

The revival of architecture will mean a comeback for skilled craftsmen. Let us, once again, create beautiful buildings which stand the test of time.

It is purported that John Dewey and William James were panpsychists. Were they?

One of my favorite descriptions of Richard Rorty: "the Trojan Horse of analytic philosophy."

I'll welcome pragmatism-themed band names as well.

Bizarre ask, I know: does anybody have any pragmatism puns or witticisms? I'm struggling to come up with clever wordplay based on pragmatic concepts or titled works and essays. I'll take any related to James, Dewey, Rorty, or the Putnams as well.

Reading Rorty is like asking a guide to help you climb Mt. Everest, then realizing you're on Mt. Fuji when you reach the peak. Sure, the guide was incorrect, but the place they led you is so significant that you realize truth is just whatever your peers let you get away with

Julia Stiles as the school newspaper’s cyberpunk editor-in-chief on a 1994 episode of ‘Ghostwriter.’ I will never get tired of this clip.

This isn't a knock on others trying to create a more flourishing life for themselves (and hopefully, for their loved ones). I'm just wondering how many of us think we're "taking on the world," when in reality we're just rootless prodigals.

For freedom? To avoid the "irritating" norms our formative communities foisted upon us? To evade responsibility or duty? To "make it" in the big city? To find happiness we we're so certain we couldn't find in our tiny little corner of the world? To climb the achievement ladder?

Many of us have chosen to reside hundreds of miles from family and long-fostered friendships, saddled ourselves with debt, and now live in ugly boxes so we don't really have to commune with others. And for what?

We liberated the individual from the confines of arbitrary relationships and limits of inherited places only to find most of us have taken on new chains.

Sign up for the Erraticus Newsletter! Ideas matter, not in and of themselves, but the degree to which they help us navigate existential challenges. We are a town square inviting our many communities to practice a philosophy of neighborliness.
