We found that changing the arm's orientation diametrically altered how spinal reflexes in the triceps were evoked, and in such a way that were again efficiently scaled to the hand's distance from the reaching target (9/11)pic.twitter.com/534H9SrbB8

In the next exp participants made the same reaching movement and we applied the same mechanical perturbations, but we changed their arm orientation, which diametrically altered how the rotation of the wrist moved the hand towards the target. (8/11)pic.twitter.com/0RP6UDHuIe

We also found that the spinal reflexes evoked in the triceps muscle were not proportional to how much the elbow was flexed – and thus how much the triceps was stretched - but instead were efficiently scaled to the hand’s distance from the reaching target. (7/11)pic.twitter.com/qsBExF76NQ

We found that the perturbations that moved the hand furthest from the target did so with the least amount of elbow flexion and perturbations that moved the hand towards the target did so with a large amount of elbow flexion (6/11)pic.twitter.com/myIwhp34Nf

The triceps stretch reflex accounted for these arm orientations - always tuned to the hand’s displacement from the target despite the local rotations of the elbow and the wrist remaining the same. (15/16)pic.twitter.com/DeWbWXrPxh

In our last exp we again applied elbow and wrist perturbations, but this time ppl grabbed the robot’s handle normally, or with their thumb pointing down. Now when the robot flexed the wrist, the hand could move far away from the target or remain close to the target. (14/16)pic.twitter.com/oCpRlukeNj

Instead, the triceps stretch reflex was tuned to the hand’s displacement from the target –largest when the hand was moved furthest from the target and actually inhibited relative to pre-perturbation muscle activity when the hand remained close. (9/16)pic.twitter.com/7xNndlSGvT

The robot could also simultaneously flex or extend their wrist. These perturbations moved the hand off the target but the hand was displaced furthest from the target when the elbow was flexed the least, and the hand remained closest when the elbow was flexed the most.(7/16)pic.twitter.com/L5JWXz8jo7

If you’re trying to keep you hand still and it’s moved bc your arm gets bumped, how do you bring it back to its original location? The simplest way is to always return every disturbed joint to its initial angular position. But this isn’t very efficient. Why…? (2/16)pic.twitter.com/UYcMEGVIjm
