All laws should include sunset provisions, and expire automatically after a fixed number of years. "A law of limited duration," wrote Thomas Jefferson, "is much more manageable than one which needs a repeal.”https://twitter.com/JBartlett_NH/status/1375065909291843586 …

Today, the N.H. Senate takes up a bill (HB208), to do something government seldom does -- repeal an occupational licensing requirement. It would eliminate an 1878 state law, still on the books, requiring a license to sell... lightning rods. http://gencourt.state.nh.us/bill_status/billText.aspx?sy=2021&id=244&txtFormat=html … #nhpolitics

Speaking of idiotic laws that need repealing, it is illegal in Massachusetts to pick mayflowers (the official state flower) "while in disguise or secretly in the nighttime." https://malegislature.gov/Laws/GeneralLaws/PartI/TitleI/Chapter2/Section7 …pic.twitter.com/UZBeTbERXR

Remarkably, the state still takes in a few hundred dollars a year (less than $400) in licensing fees from this law.

In general I agree, but there's one thing that many people on our side of that proposal either don't realize or don't acknowledge: every time a law reaches its end, renewal will be debated, and a whole new round of lobbying ($$$) will occur--which politicians will love.

The only laws that expire are tax cuts for some reason

Manageable, perhaps, for legislators. But ultimately an object of contempt to citizens. TJ missed the mark on this one.

Why contempt for citizens? More a recognition that legislation is never perfect and could use a little regular review.

Jeff: We don't need a full-time legislature. The Great and General Court spends too much time in session. Also Jeff: The Great and General Court needs to review & debate every state law regularly to affirm that murder is still a crime & mayflower-picking is not.
