True, but only valid if the person in the openers spot is better or more likely to be successful than the actual starter. For me this is one of those over thinking it things.

It is only used for back-end starters, so they feel the opener is a better matchup against the top of the lineup.
-
I get that, but is Bedrosian that? He hasn't exactly been bulletproof at times. If it backfires, which it will eventually, you have no outs.
-
Who is bulletproof?
-
No one of course, but Bedrosians struggles are well known. If were going to put a guy in there to save the SP from faces the hardest part of the lineup shouldn't it be someones that has a better shot at getting them out?
-
Bedrosian has now allowed no runs in 11 of his 13 games this season.
-
and yet last year everyone wanted to cut him many times. I get it, you support this, i simply dont. weve been fortunate with it, but its a trend i do not support.

But you have burned a pitcher after 3 outs, possibly needlessly
-
If it allows you to get one more inning out of the starter, it's a net-positive, though.
-
Makes sense if each individual game is played in a vacuum. But when you start managing how many days in a row certain guys can pitch, it seems like you may be depleting your staff unnecessarily.
-
The idea is to get more innings out of your starter, not less. So it depletes the bullpen more to have him start. Assuming it works as intended.

But it also eliminates the chance of getting a complete game, complete no hitter or a complete perfect game. What pitcher doesn't want at least one of those?
-
When a pitcher is experienced and established enough to get any of those, they don’t use the opener. You won’t see an opener for Skaggs, Harvey or Cahill.
-
You could argue we need to use an opener for Harvey and Cahill

Wouldn't it better to get at least 2 or 3 innings out of an opener? Then bulk guy 4 or 5? Then close it out with 1 or 2 1 inning guys?
-
Generally the relievers you have to pitch 3 innings are not your best relievers, so that wouldn't really help.

i think he concept would work better if the opener pitcher could pitch at least 2 innings. then your "real starter" starts off against the bottom third of the lineup and then he's not pitching to the big hitters a third time until batter number 22
-
Generally your good relievers are not two-inning guys, though.
