Are search results honestly served by TPU inference? Seems way too slow compared to search returns. Or is it actually some cached BERT embedding lookup?

Yes, some aspects of generating the search results involve running neural net inference at query time (using TPUs). We've been doing that since 2015: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-10-26/google-turning-its-lucrative-web-search-over-to-ai-machines … What's new is we're now using a more powerful model based on BERT, improving results substantially.
