The world is experiencing a public health crisis and the Trump admin is still expanding the Global Gag Rule, which cuts off funding to any health care org that supports family planning and reproductive health. Here are just a few consequences of this dangerous policy (THREAD):
The GAO estimates that this rule restricts over $12 billion of funding that would have been distributed among 1,200 NGOs around the world.
The rule has caused more than 50 projects to lose funding entirely, effectively ending their ability to provide health care services. These cover services like family planning/reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, nutrition, and maternal and child health.
Restricted funds often cut off access to care for the most vulnerable populations, and eliminate access to abortion even in countries where it is fully legalized.
This pandemic has made clear that health problems around the world can quickly become our own.
