This 100%. As a person who has been working on my own game as an indie developer and literally in my spare time playing games. I have burnt out several times within this lockdown alone, on both developing and playing them. Always set some time doing other things you find fun.
I worry about new devs putting every ounce of their energy into making and playing games. Burnout is real. Please, have hobbies and friends outside of games. You don't need to live, breathe, and eat games to be good at creating them. Rest and breadth are very good for you.

I think it isn't on them to do this, they need responsible managers not work a holics that want to use them and abuse them. They need leaders that encourage them to be people and not robots putting games into our hands. Then maybe we will start seeing quality come back too.

This was less about work and more about people's beliefs around game dev identity. I see it a lot. It's like nothing else exists. I'm anticrunch.

Recall being a manager isn't being a supiorer unless your actually ahead of the game. Your top down view means nothing to the people you lead if your perspective doesn't take into care those who have elevated you to mentor / lead / create with them.

I can't remember which lecturer it was who said it, but we were encouraged to have hobbies outside games and consume other forms of media precisely because you can't create good things if you exist in a bubble. Also it's so good to just switch off and mentally reset/ recover.
