Back in the day, Doctors were really loathe to cut into someone's torso, it was full of goo, and organs, and couldn't get even a little dirty and it was Very Stressful, so caesarean births were a big no-no. Babies had to be pushed out through the birth canal. No other option.

So, in the late 1700's some doctors were like "some of these babies are getting stuck in the birth canal and it's an absolute nightmare and women keep dying after hours of agony, what do we do?" And their answer was: cut off bits of the pelvis to make room.

So these poor women were giving birth to a baby, and the baby was stuck, and they're in unbelievable pain, and anaesthetic hasn't been invented yet, and the doctor is like "lemme just cut off some of your pelvis while you're giving birth" I mean, it's not an ideal situation.

The thing about the pelvis is that it's a bone, you know? And bone is hard to cut through, especially when your patient is fully conscious and giving birth and you're just hacking at their pelvis with a little saw or knife. By hand. For a LONG time. Enter the chainsaw...

In about 1780 this doctor decides he's gonna try and reduce the time he spends sawing away at the pelvises of women in the midst of childbirth. He put a load of little sharp blades on a chain, and looped it onto a little tool with a hand crank, and voila, the chainsaw was born.pic.twitter.com/umNbtjOxTj

Doctors realised it was really quick at cutting through bone and made bigger ones for use in amputations. Then non-doctors saw how useful they were. Finally electricity was added, making the power tool we know today. But the original chainsaw was invented to help in childbirth.

And that's how the chainsaw was invented in the 1700's in order to to cut off bits of women's pelvises while they were in the middle of giving birth more efficiently. Impromptu history thread, over.

I do history threads. Is this a proper one? Probably not, it'd midnight and I just typed it out on the fly. Still, you can find more deeply bizzare and at least mildly horrifying historical facts and stories here. They're all 100% true (unfortunately):https://twitter.com/JayHulmePoet/status/1077958443410042880 …
