Aw, poor Dr. Jay. If quacks, following in the footsteps of Dr. Bob Sears, hadn't gone hog wild selling bogus medical exemptions based on nothing resembling science, maybe @DrPanMD wouldn't have seen the need to tighten up #SB277 this way. 1/https://twitter.com/JayGordonMDFAAP/status/1118752890309373952 …

I testified and sat next to Dr. Pan. SB276 is a broken promise. SB277 passed and was signed by the governor with emphasis on medical exempt status being decided by the doctor who knew the child best. Medical Exemptions based on my judgement are not loopholes, they're the law. https://twitter.com/Goldduzt86/status/1116908984089210880 …

I was warning about this loophole right when #SB277 passed. If you let any doctor write a letter supporting a medical exemption, then of course doctors catering to antivax parents would see this loophole as a potential profit center. 2/https://respectfulinsolence.com/2015/07/22/after-sb-277-medical-exemptions-to-vaccine-mandates-for-sale-courtesy-of-dr-bob-sears/ …

I was correct too. Dr. Sears led the way on a gold rush of antivaccine quacks selling bogus medical exemptions. 3/https://respectfulinsolence.com/2016/05/09/after-sb-277-medical-exemptions-for-sale-courtesy-of-dr-bob-sears-and-other-antivaccine-quacks/ …

A parent even sent me a medical exemption letter generated from an online request system without the doctor ever having examined the child. The fee? $180. 4/https://respectfulinsolence.com/2016/07/29/after-sb-277-online-medical-exemptions-to-school-vaccine-mandates-are-now-for-sale/ …

Then there's Dr. Tara Zandvliet, who is responsible for one-third of all the medical exemptions in San Diego. @JayGordonMDFAAP, do your approve of this? 5/https://www.voiceofsandiego.org/topics/news/one-doctor-is-responsible-for-a-third-of-all-medical-vaccine-exemptions-in-san-diego/ …

And how about it, Dr. Jay? Have you written letters supporting medical exemptions based on scientifically unsupportable reasons like a family history of autoimmune disease? If so, you personally contributed to the problem that led @DrPanMD to act. 6/

The bottom line is that this is not about doctors "who know the patient best" acting in the child's best interest. It's about unscrupulous doctors making money writing bogus medical exemptions for profit and thereby undermining #SB277. 7/

So don't whine, @JayGordonMDFAAP. @DrPanMD did what was politically feasible while trusting his colleagues to be honest brokers when it came to writing medical exemptions. They weren't. Antivax pediatricians cashed in. 8/

Yes, the California Medical Board did step in and discipline Dr. Sears, but it can't be counted on to crack down on all the doctors practicing outside the standard of care and using bogus medical exemption letters. @DrPanMD is right to try to fix that loophole. 9/9

A strong case: aluminum in vaccines is known to increase the incidence of multiple sclerosis and lupus. If there’s a strong family history—a genetic predisposition—I support vaccinating later and slower. These are not “anti-vaxxers”. These are informed, loving, careful parents.

Except a caring dr would recommend a vax with an alternate adjuvant to be administered more frequently instead. If, that is, he or she chooses to ignore several peer-reviewed case-control studies refuting the allegation. Here’s just one: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1002/art.38429 … Best regards.

There are no credible epi papers linking vaccines and MS or lupus. And if you are going to blame aluminum, surely tattoos or antacids would be much more important battles for you to fight.

Not really. And how many fraudulent cases have been found? 2 thus far, and one is on probation. The medical board is doing their job. A government official should not be making a medical decison in place of a physician.
