It looks like this goes as far back as the N64 delay, but I havent had any luck finding the original either

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/gamesblog/2012/apr/27/shigeru-miyamoto-rushed-game-forever-bad … It's from an interview in 2012 about how the N64 was delayed 3 months.

Nah this isn't the original. One of many articles quoting it but never citing the source

MAYBE it's this quote paraphrased? "The entire staff starts to feel like “If I let the game be released in this state, I will be ashamed.” Because if the development team doesn’t end up feeling like craftsmen, artisans… then it won’t be a good game."https://shmuplations.com/miyamotoxnaka/

OH SNAP. This might be it. Yeah the quote flying around now is definitely a paraphrased one which made the original harder to find. We found it quoted on an online newsboard from 2003.

I found this about him reflecting on the quote:https://www.nintendo-insider.com/shigeru-miyamoto-reflects-on-his-most-famous-quote/ …

As it turns out, when "Gamers" throw out this quote as some kind of slam dunk about why games should stay in development forever, he has been walking it back & clarifying it over the years. It was always more personal to him and not meant as an industry quote.

I believe this is a classic misattributed quote. This is what I believe the source is: A quote from Jason Schreiber at GT Interactive in GameFan, June 1998 pg 63. I'll describe why I think this is.pic.twitter.com/g8yNDtpFBf

Rumor has it that this quote - as supposedly said by Miyamoto - was about Ocarina of Time which was announced in 1995 and released in 1998. Unreal, mentioned here, pretty much had the exact same fate. Endlessly teased until release in 1998.
