and here's the reason I'm porting to WebGPU -- compute shaders! For HDR rendering / auto-exposure, I need to sort luminance into buckets. Watch the histogram between the old impl using Occlusion Queries, and the new one using Compute. It's so much faster and more responsive!

I couldn't sleep, so I wrote my own tessellated sphere renderer inspired by the Outer Wilds tech art talk. It adaptively subdivides the sphere into a series of seamless patches based on camera distance for LOD; extra vertex displacement is provided by the vertex shader.

I should say, Outer Wilds's tornadoes use a modern variation on this. They also don't rotate directly, but are rigged skinned meshes, have shader-driven vertex motion to add turbulence like the wiggle, and use texture scrolling to imply motion. Plus some other tricks.
