I ended up making it work w/ anaconda (but my own dumbness also had messed up my pip env in /usr/local, had to fix that)

my complaint might be more that Spacemacs leans very much towards "heavy weight" layers by default it seems

so unless you go through and explicitly turn off each thing, it wants 2-dozen of the common devtools for that layer

Yeah I agree, the layers are heavy. It'd be nice if they could be a bit more modular somehow
