It was a battle flag from Virginia. So yes, technically service to the Confederacy, sacrifice by dying for a lost cause, and heritage if by that you mean keeping things as they were, things in this case being the torture and enslavement of an entire race of people.

The Confederate Flag was about—Service (permanent, unpaid, forced), Sacrifice (of labor, children, identities, freedom, lives), & Heritage (slavery was inherited through the mother). So…technically, Nikki Haley was correct. Although I’m pretty sure this wasn’t her intention.

The Confederate Flag always was, and still is, about armed rebellion & treason against the United States, carried out for the purpose of retaining slavery & maintaining white supremacy. Everything else is a fig leaf on history and current events. Roof is a product of that hatred.
