It was a battle flag from Virginia. So yes, technically service to the Confederacy, sacrifice by dying for a lost cause, and heritage if by that you mean keeping things as they were, things in this case being the torture and enslavement of an entire race of people.

Yes it was Dylan Roof who turned it into a hate symbol, not the soldiers who fought under it to preserve human bondage.

The KKK was using it way before Dylan Roof was even born. Alabama used it to protest desegregation in the 50’s. It’s been a symbol of hate for years and there’s no accident about that.
