My latest in Archival Science, “Epistemologies of the Archive: Toward a Critique of Archival Reason,” explores archival research & practice via epistemology—how & why archivists & historians have claimed archives allow us to study the past & why it matters

"Of course, dirty tricks aren’t new to American politics." But have the dirty tricks been based on the people's fundamental inability to handle our contemporary information society? We are entering a dark time...

Dear professors, do you have a hot take about the classroom that involves banning devices? I have some advice. Stop. No matter how well-intentioned, your essays continue to reinforce that classrooms are not spaces for the disabled or students with increasingly complex lives.

If you missed our last episode with Rachel Harris (), check out our conversation about how we teach & talk about the Arab-Israeli conflict. Here Rachel talks about how studying the conflict helps students cope with a world of "fake news"

This gets me thinking abt how astronomy is epistemologically similar to history—astronomers study things they can only observe indirectly & everything technically was in the past—even the sun is 8 min ago! The sky is an archive on a cosmological timescale

We're encouraged to do "public engagement" & I believe it's impt—I mean, I run —but I know from exp our actual JOB is to teach undergrads & write for scholarly consumption. We don't really get credit for the kind of "public engagement" Lepore is talking about.

Lepore & Kornbluh have very different views on what constitutes scholars' "involvement in public life." Lepore is at Harvard, and largely publishes books for a popular audience (she's currently on sabbatical to do just that!), Kornbluh is at a public institution.

I LOVE what Anna Kornbluh () has to say: "Most faculty teach in teaching-intensive public institutions. That *is* public, human, face-to-face communication. A lot of public humanities discourse actually devalues that labor, which has already suffered tremendously. "

While Jill Lepore argues that "The retreat of humanists from public life (has had) enormous consequences for the prestige of humanistic ways of knowing and understanding the world"—others disagree. (Cf: )

What led me to start my blog in Nov 2010–really the start of online & public scholarship for me—was the popularity of Glenn Beck’s “Beck University” with its “classes” on topics like “America” (“taught” by David Barton!).
