Fellow settlers: I urge you to follow some of the following folx - I feel like I've learned more (and more important stuff) from them than I did in grad school: 1/

Educational institutions are incredibly attached to the power they hold over students. Sadly, some teachers are also incredibly attached to that power. So much of the student experience of education crashes upon the rocks of their own systemic disempowerment.

Yesterday, Alberta's premier announced 904 opioid overdose deaths from Jan. to Oct. 2020 (66% increase in the death rate y/y). He attributed this increase to CERB and reduced treatment access. I tweeted already about why it is not CERB, today let's look at treatment.

    1. Some settlers ask ‘what is something I can do to be in solidarity with Indigenous folks but that doesn’t take away from Indigenous struggle’. I think I finally have a concrete answer to this after a few decades of activism, research, organizing, etc..

The entire community will be watching closely tomorrow as the Board of Governors considers the GFC recommendation on restructuring. Anything other than unanimous approval will be seen as an aggressive rejection of collegial governance.

If you’re looking for a new angle to look at Canadian history, you need to look at Braden Tehiwi’s chapter, Indigenous Peoples’ Cultures and Physical Activities, in this👇🏽 edited collected by Carly Adams. I’ll be using it in my new course on Decolonizing Canada this winter term.

So much of governing is making tough choices. Some will say made a tough choice today. But today was really the conclusion of his unwillingness to face tough choices until there was no choice left to be made. Today was recognition that he failed us all.

If the Premier wants to single out anyone, he should focus on those knowingly putting our frontline workers and their families at risk by violating public health orders, not the people working the jobs we need to keep our city going during a global pandemic.

After some much needed sleep, I've finally been able to wrap my head around yesterday's new measures. Aside from a couple of poorly chosen or meaningless closures, the recommendations have just essentially changed the previous recommendations into rules. A thread.../1

Quick question. Are the people bringing up “mental health” during the pandemic also calling out the UCP for cutting health spending by $54 million since last year, which would affect publicly funded mental health services? And that’s not accounting for population or inflation.
