Because the alleged vandal cited Scott F. Wolter of America Unearthed in his tweets claiming credit for the vandalism, journalistic due diligence required asking Wolter for comment, which I did.

Wolter immediately contacted the editor-in-chief of The Atlantic, copying his talent agent and the producers of his former show, to demand a different writer cover any story mentioning him due to what he perceived as my bias. This set off a chain reaction of concern.

Although the editors at The Atlantic found no ethical issues with me writing a story that mentioned Wolter, they nevertheless decided not to go forward with the story, but did invite me to write something else for them in the coming months.
