Nothing against folks from Ivy leagues. But I wish I had known before grad school not to have hopes and dreams of an academic career unless I attended one of a small handful of elite schools.

For the record, there are many creative scholars, doing path-breaking research at land grant and public universities. Just because people can’t afford or don’t have the right connections to get into an Ivy League does not mean they can’t compete with the elite.

I am always surprised that there are all these prizes and awards where the academy just chooses those who won in life from the get-go. The things we are overlooking by this methodology are mindboggling.

Yes. Imagine the projects that ultimately get abandoned because they’re unsupported or underfunded and the scholars who leave their fields because the system cannot sustain them.
