So I'm doing a project where I'm training a neural network to generate new knitting patterns. It's going very well. This is "Mystery lace", test-knit by DataSock. https://www.ravelry.com/discuss/lazy-stupid-and-godless/3718985/426-450#442 …pic.twitter.com/Lmt5ipqwIK

"Mystery Lace", test-knit by Datasock. It is mostly a long lumpy tentacle thing with a small lacy flat patch with random holes. Caption: "It looks like the mystery is tentacles!"

I'm training it on a combination of well-behaved swatch patterns from http://stitch-maps.com  and a crowdsourced set of socks, tentacles, and unmentionables from http://ravelry.com  . And some good sports at Ravelry have been kind enough to test-knit.

I should probably note that I have just as much knitting knowledge as the neural net: that is, none. There are way smarter ways to build a knitting algorithm. Very early on, I realized humor would be my goal. Hence the tentacles in the dataset.

I learned knitters are amazing at debugging, used to fixing all sorts of pattern problems. They took most of the neural net's mistakes in stride. Test-knitting: CorvusAlatus https://www.ravelry.com/discuss/lazy-stupid-and-godless/3718985/251-275#267 …pic.twitter.com/j2IVS69g2z

Ok, so i’m Playing with the Winder Socks “pattern”, and it has potential. It also has problems.
I cast on 73 stitches, worked the row 1 ribbing for a bit before starting with the purl and mesh sections. It’s not 2x2 ribbing as written, but 4x2, with the exception of where the beginning/end of the round would be.
So, I started the mesh, and…either i’ve screwed up, or it’s naturally increasing by 1 each round.

A bit about why knitters are so good at debugging:https://twitter.com/mikamckinnon/status/964325850748403712 …

Yeaaaahhh.... Knitting is effectively coding, requiring algebra to modify size/needle gauge/yarn weight/tension. Abbreviations & jargon are inconsistent; older (pre-90s) patterns are frequently abstracted. Debugging is as normal as casting on or off.

This is "Lacy 2047", test-knit by michaela112358, who called row 15 "a bit of a head-melter." "This AI pattern lacked the rhythm that you tend to get with a normal pattern." https://www.ravelry.com/discuss/lazy-stupid-and-godless/3718985/526-550#542 …pic.twitter.com/m93h8r2iQR

Heroically long pink coil of lace, widening and tapering like some kind of dancing earthworm
Detail of the midsection. Branching columns are interspersed with huge random holes. Looks very organic.

"Blätman" as test-knit by MeganAnn, who had to adapt to some missing rows, but was surprised that the other rows matched each other without help. "an elegant and subtle textural pattern with asymmetrical eyelets and a gently scalloped right edge" https://www.ravelry.com/discuss/lazy-stupid-and-godless/3718985/551-575#559 …pic.twitter.com/q19RnnHUHU

"Blätman" again, but this time MeganAnn omitted the missing rows altogether when she knit the top half. Note the huge difference in texture. Like two kinds of tree bark. https://www.ravelry.com/discuss/lazy-stupid-and-godless/3718985/551-575#560 …pic.twitter.com/YgHIf6h3xQ

Top half of the knitted swatch has big horizontal protrusions. Bottom of the swatch has smaller, thinner ridges.

Here's another version of "Fishcock" knit this time by BellaG. Note the differences vs the Fishcock earlier in this thread! https://www.ravelry.com/discuss/lazy-stupid-and-godless/3718985/601-625#606 …pic.twitter.com/v5DpAjpck4

        A small lacy pink curl.
There’s not a number of stitches that will work for all rows, so I started with 15 (the repeat done twice, plus the end stitch). Rows 2, 4, 5 and 7 didn’t have enough stitches, so I just worked the pattern until I got to the end stitch and worked that as written. Double yarnovers can’t be just knit or just purled on the recovery rows; you have to knit one and purl the other, so I did that when I got to the double yar

This one's called "aaa", test-knit by farahlizzy who had to do some fancy work to get the rows to line up. https://www.ravelry.com/discuss/lazy-stupid-and-godless/3718985/601-625#607 …pic.twitter.com/MLRULYzjAl

Knitted swatch with very thick sections and blotches alternating with regions of large random holes
I was impressed that the odd rows were mostly knit stitches and the even ones mostly purl.

It’s quite pretty, you could definitely design a nice lace pattern from that.

Two gorgeous renditions of "Winder socks" by totesmyname. Top almost as written, bottom with more adaptations. https://www.ravelry.com/discuss/lazy-stupid-and-godless/3718985/601-625#616 …pic.twitter.com/y4mT0EqQDv

two knitted swatches. Top: branching lacy columns with regular holes. Bottom: the columns are flatter and more regular. I'm sorry I don't have the knitting vocab to describe these better! They are gorgeous.

"Reverss Shawl" also beautifully test-knit by totesmyname. Bottom swatch is as-written by the neural net. Top is with stray stitches removed so the counts work out. https://www.ravelry.com/discuss/lazy-stupid-and-godless/3718985/601-625 …pic.twitter.com/w70IKXQKB8

Top swatch is square with very defined columns and thin lace between them. Bottom swatch is a squashed cone that looks much more irregular.
Bottom swatch is the “as written” version with the exception of starting with a garter stitch tab shawl. I didn’t get many repeats in because I remembered how much I hate the stitch count of shawls.

Row 1 of pattern: k2tog, yo, k2, yo, k2tog, k2, (repeat until last st), yo, k1
Row 2: P2, yo, p2tog, k3, (repeat until last st), k1

The effect of that stray yarnover is that row 2 was always slightly offset from row 1

"Fancy 6 Wood Lace" as test-knit by totesmyname. "I didn’t expect I’d ever have thought to use the term “unsettling” when describing a swatch, but here we are. Repeating an essentially random stitch pattern produced a sort of uncanny valley effect." https://www.ravelry.com/discuss/lazy-stupid-and-godless/3718985/626-650#629 …pic.twitter.com/uSNHyfPLX4

A very long string with a center medallion of random lace. Looks like it could be an eyepatch. There is a cat in the scene.
This is the "unsettling" one. Big holes alternate with tightly knitted sections in a very random-looking pattern.

"Love Increase Edgcock for Lace Edging", test-knit by MeganAnn. "It was remarkably good at the ending instructions matching the number of stitches it said to leave before working them." https://www.ravelry.com/discuss/lazy-stupid-and-godless/3718985/626-650#637 …pic.twitter.com/8nWSQvdXHM

It is kind of a lace edging. Deeply scalloped edge, irregular lace blending into regular knitting.

This is the rather unassuming "Man Leaf Cross", also test-knit by MeganAnn. "I turned the work at the end of the instructions each row, and chose to interpret the ‘missing’ rows as ‘knit across’." https://www.ravelry.com/discuss/lazy-stupid-and-godless/3718985/626-650#637 …pic.twitter.com/LB2dbMyMPw

It is a small orange wing-shaped thing with a kind of knot in the middle.
