I love this list, and have a plethora of scars and lost sleep from pagers going off to go with every single point. I have a question, though. You list YAGNI early on, then give a laundry list of essential things that are much more expensive to try to bolt on later.

How do you respond to management (or engineers) citing YAGNI to the kind of monitoring, tests, introspection, auditing, or prod replica for dev environments work that you list?

Why only consider PostgreSQL

You should of course consider other options, I just think it should be your default choice.

It’s funny how reading this list I can feel the years of pain and suffering that have led me to largely the same conclusions. I think you’ve written them down better than I could though.

Yes, writing this was basically a therapeutical exercise...
I’d very much like to see your list though.

This is quite interesting! I wrote something remarkably similar (with the same title) a few months ago: http://zen.lk/2019/08/18/Things-I-believe/ … . We should see if there are more people converging on the same set of ideas...

This looks great, thanks for sharing!
