I had been looking forward to ’s take on GHOSTBUSTERS. Then he went and said that stupid shit about “handing the movie back to the fans,” as if the female cast had stolen the original from our precious little boy memories or something. I’ll probably skip it now.

There's also a fascinating kind of revisionism in assuming that all of these 70s and 80s pop culture favorites were the exclusive property of boys. I was 7 when the first Star Wars movie came out and I loved it. So did most of my female friends.

I was a teenager when Ghostbusters came out. Loved it. Saw it twice in the theater. So why do men believe either of these things belongs to *them and them alone?*

I respectfully disagree with you. GB fandom extends far beyond the 84 film, with back stories and inside jokes passed along by the cartoon. The 16 version was fine as a standalone property, but people connected to the original lore likely hated it.

Yep. We can’t pretend GB2 was pure excellence, even if it had its moments. I liked the reboot and I’m a fan from the original (which I saw in the theatre at like 5 and was terrified of the marshmallow man)
mannnn i really think he just wants to recapture the 80s aesthetic of the originals that were his dad's opus, i seriously doubt he wanted the quote to come off as MAGA hashtag-ish as it did. there's no way in hell he actually wants another culture war swirling around his film.
