A naval battle off the Italiote Greek city of Cumae in 474 BC resonated across the Mediterranean. Not necessarily for its importance, but because the victor used it as a key element in his propaganda campaign. A new article by Dr :

Not sure how this is useful research... seems to be capitalising on public fascination with the mummified remains of ancient Egyptian people & interest in 3D printing to create an entirely speculative reconstruction with little purpose or basis in reality

Academic books are expensive, especially in January when budgets are tight. But there are a number of publishers providing excellent volumes completely open access. A thread of Egyptological open access books (pls add to it!)👇

Fucking hell. Wait until you see the proportion of female Archaeology professors in the UK, relative to those in History and Law. UK Archaeology very definitely has a women problem. As Hawkes would have had it, the data speaks for itself.

Change will only come to any area of archaeology when men recognise that equality can only come when *they* practice it - step aside at conferences, stop attending manels, promote women to leadership, centre women's voices, amplify women's scholarship & read the Equality Act

PSA for archaeologists: "heteronormative" is a sort-of-synonym for "homophobic," not for "straight." Please stop saying that people are "heteronormative" when you mean they are straight. As a queer archaeologist, I find your misuse of basic queer vocabulary heteronormative.

One of my favorite mosaics in the Bibliotheca Alexandrina is this 2nd century BC mosaic panel, with the depiction of a dog, seated next to a knocked-over gold wine jug, with wooden handle. It once graced a floor in the royal quarter of Alexandria Egypt

Germany 🇩🇪 is launching the most environmentally friendly trains in the world. They are powered by hydrogen and oxygen. The only waste they produce is water. We have the solutions. Time to ditch fossil fuels and implement them.

The gothic West Front of Wells Cathedral - with c.300 carved figures - in medieval times was painted vibrant colours. Also I learned today of the “Singing Galleries” behind the sculptures: so that trumpets & choirs could play thru apertures, amazing the citizens below. Incredible
