I don't understand the economics of divestment (my ignorance I'm sure); can someone point me in the right direction please? If the businesses remain profitable then someone is definitely going to buy them, especially if the share price falls. And they might not be good people.

I agree, I have gradually and reluctantly concluded that whilst divestment from debt is very important as it directly raises the cost of doing business, equity owners are better off continuing to own and putting pressure on management to act more sustainably.

Any company without 'sustainable' in their values can't be seen as an investment. It's pretty simple. Fossil fuel giants have had plenty of time to prepare. They are now dinosaurs with an asteroid approaching. As the climate crisis grows they will only become more toxic.
