At the time brand supervisors thought that the Super Famicom maybe looked too cute and cuddly. Lance Barr of NOA: ‘The Super Famicom was maybe okay for the market in Japan. For the US, I felt that it was too soft and had no edge.’

oh yeah. Everything had to be edgy in the US in the 90s (oh man, the comic books, what the hell?). A lot of console and game advertising (particularly from the likes of Sega) was very much going for that.
