      Unpopular opinion: I like both.

Agreed! I get that fans love the G1 era but I really don't see what people found so wrong about the Autobots getting a redesign for a new saga of their franchise? Plus the detail given to them is incredible and the transformation animations were visually stunning!

I personally thought of the complaints about the movie designs not matching the G1 designs were silly. Though I also think the movie designs were horrible because the sheer amount of detail and lack of any focal point makes them hard to look at.

"because the sheer amount of detail and lack of any focal point makes them hard to look at." I felt that way especially towards the Decepticons more so than the Autobots.

Yeah, it was worse with the Decepticons. I suppose I can give the production team credit for making a very bold design choice for what are essentially alien robots. It's just not the right design choice for these kinds of stories.

Half of the fun of the Transformers designs is that when they’re in robot form, you can see clearly how the vehicle has been rearranged to make a robot. The ‘bunch of parts’ movie designs remove that fun, and also what makes a Transformer design unique from other mechs.

Not sure if it's that unique from other transforming mechs (see Robotech/Macross, which arguably did it better in animation), Though I agree with the rest. Also, it provides a nice organizing principle for the design, something that feels absent to me in the movie designs.
