I always think a lot of 90s cgi looks strangely tangible. Like there's less detail but it's lit more naturally and you believe it's in-camera?

Yeah Starship Troopers and Jurassic Park are also good in this way. Maybe it helps that it’s on film and the overall film look and grain help to sell it more.

all those films have some great practical effects in there to sell the transitions too i think? i guess it's that period where the technology was quite limited so they worked REALLY hard to make it work.

Yes....masters of practical fx like Stan Winston, Phil Tippett, and Dennis Muren brought their wizardry to a lot of those 90s CGI movies.
