It’s true that Trump’s base isn’t poor. But it’s absolutely made up mostly of non-college-educated white voters. According to validated exit-poll data, in 2016 Trump lost white college voters by 17 points, and won white non-college voters by 36 points. That’s a huge difference.https://twitter.com/Sarah_Smarsh/status/1347628615530237952 …

Approval ratings throughout Trump’s presidency show the same split, with white college voters overwhelmingly disapproving of Trump’s performance and white non-college voters approving of it.

2020 exit-poll data isn’t as reliable as 2016’s, but it also shows Trump losing white college voters, and winning non-college ones by a substantial margin.

Obviously there are lots of white college voters who support Trump - the US has lots of white college graduates. But the education gap in support for Trump, and for the GOP, is absolutely real. Most white college voters oppose Trump. Most white non college voters support him.

i bet privileged people are also overrepresented among antiffa and others who can afford to fly to a city to join protests. that doesn't mean there aren't economically hurting advocates for police reform

It’s also a *change.* Republicans used to win voters with college degrees, while white voters without a degree were much more Democratic than they are now.

Democrats managed to pretend for a century that they helped poor people, without ever actually helping poor people. It transformed the party into a party of rich people who want to look like they help poor people. Now it's the Republicans turn to pretend they help poor people

Another dividing line is whether your pay is based on salary/wages (lower risk) vs commissions/profits (higher risk - think salesmen, business owners, anyone who ever looked in the mirror and saw John Galt/Hank Reardon/ Dabney Taggert) They all see Trump as one if themselves.

You know Trump's behavior is bad enough and the Capitol Hill rioters awful....but injecting critical race theory into this and making this all about "white supremacy" which it isn't is just going to make things worse..
