I think magnetically accelerated bits of metal are the next leap forward, but size and power requirements will keep them artillery weapons instead of hand held.

How would a change even be implemented when the tech catches up. How many guns are out there legally to be replaced. Just a thought. Not expecting a plan
-
Depends on where you are in the world. In the Netherlands there are 2.6 legal guns per 100 people, almost exclusively in the hands of police and military. In the US there are 120 guns per 100 people.

It's also the most efficient way to get things to pluto. If your gonna point to a technology to wonder why we don't have more advanced guns space ships aren't the best pick, since they operate on the same principle.

Guns seem like a bad idea inside enclosed pressurized spaces though.

We have rounds designed to fire in airplanes. Designing a round to work in the space seems a better solve than going back 500 years technology wise to solve the problem.

In terms of physics principles, a gun isn't so different than a tiny solid rocket motor. True it lasts a very short time, but it has a very light payload and so can achieve very high initial velocity.

Can we also talk about how every superhero has to be bulletproof or else is less useful than just a well trained person with a gun? Or how 90% of superheroes could upgrade themselves massively by combining their power with an assault rifle?
