Whilst the uk wants to spend £150bn in HS2 to gain 6 min from London to Birmingham!! We’re so far behind it’s frightening!!

This is entirely because we’ve spent decades looking down on other European countries, rather than realising many of the things we moan about, **such as trains** they do far, far better. Euro-skepticism was always a massive, misguided, self-defeating con.

how will they generate the electricity to split the water into oxygen and hydrogen?
-
Isn't the electricity conversion effective rate something like 50%? If the line was electrified, power conversion runs as 80% effectiveness which is much better for the environment

No, they are mostly powered by Fossil Fuels, Gas, some of it from Russia, lignite, which is also known as brown coal, is in the mix of the stuff needed to generate the electricity needed, that's used to produce the Hydrogen. http://bit.ly/38I28Ek .
-
Fossil fuels usage is simply a bad choice. Solar is an ideal energy source for electrolysis of water to produce hydrogen.

hydrogen, anyone remember the hindenburg?
-
Yes, everyone remembers the Hindenburg, and everyone knows that a) the diesel for its engines did more harm than the hydrogen and b) a train is not suspended in mid air by hydrogen. The Hindenburg is not relevant to hydrogen powered trains.

So long as the hydrogen is generated from renewables or nuclear.
-
It’s a fair point - but burning hydrogen is cleaner locally no matter how it was produced, and if your HC is only running a H cracking station, it’s more efficient than when used in an engine.

is launching the most environmentally friendly trains in the world. They are powered by hydrogen and oxygen. The only waste they produce is water.
