This has been going for a while here in most supermarkets they have a Gaspillage shelf with short date products, unsold veg, fruit etc. Lidl for example may sell a box full of fruit and veg for 1 euro.

Yes, Lidl are fantastic! I bought 10 Kg of Nectarines, a couple of months ago, for 1€ and the jam is great!
