James Martin, SJ’s Tweets

That's Fr. Dennis Yesalonia, SJ, the (actual) pastor of the (actual) Church of St. Ignatius Loyola, the (actual/fictional) site of the (fictional) Funeral Mass of the (fictional) Logan Roy, playing a (fictional) Cardinal Archbishop of New York, in tonight's #Succession.

Someone just sent me this clip, ironically, right after I finished celebrating the 9:30 Mass this morning, at the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola, where Logan Roy was buried. Who knew they were Catholics? (Based on a few episodes, my sense is they're not especially good ones.)

RIP #MartinAmis. I must have read "Money" four or five times when it came out in the 80s. His voice--louche, precise, scabrous, incisive, lacerating--was captivating. Boy, could he write. May he rest in peace.

Gospel: In Jesus's Last Discourse, he speaks in a highly formal way, which sometimes seems different than his speech in the Synoptics (Jn 17). We're lucky to have four portraits of Jesus in the Gospels, four depictions of the same fully human, fully divine center of our faith.

Dear friends: Join us for our Friday faith sharing and Bible study today at 3 PM ET on my Facebook page, when we will discuss the Gospel reading for the 7th Sunday of Easter: Jesus's glorification (Jn 17:1-11a). As ever, looking forward to your insights!

Gospel: Jesus acknowledges the disciples' sadness as he prepares to leave them, in his Farewell Discourse (Jn 16). The Christian life is not devoid of sadness and disappointment, but as Jesus promises his disciples, through the presence of the Spirit, hope is always present.

Gospel: On the Solemnity of the Ascension we mark the Risen Christ's being taken up, bodily, into heaven. My favorite part of the narrative is the angel saying to the disciples, "Why are you standing there looking at the sky?" (Acts 1) I.e., it's time to spread the Good News!

Praising St Francis Xavier as "the greatest missionary of modern times," Pope Francis says the love of Christ drove him to the farthest parts of the world to spread the Gospel. Read more about the Pope's catechesis at today's General Audience:

Sister Luisa Derouen, a Dominican Sister, has probably ministered to more transgender people than anyone else in the Catholic Church in the United States, perhaps in the world. She is worthy listening to.

Gospel: Today Jesus tells the disciples "I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth" (Jn 16). The Spirit would continue to reveal God's saving presence to Jesus's disciples, as it does to us.
