Non profit universities probably not your best example here

Why not? I think pro-profit universities tend to signal that you can't trust them. Not that you can 100% trust non-profits, but the signal is there.

The bigger problem though is that it doesn't work historically. Case study 1 (old): http://diasporafoundation.org . Case study 2 (new): http://mewe.com . Privacy alone is extremely important enough to switch over/pay for only for an extremely small minority of people.

Why not ban all companies from collecting personal data without express consent of each individual, and also require them to delete all data they currently hold?

The world is ready for a Facebook replacement. Zuck had his fling. Sold our digital DNA to whoever paid the price. Time for him and his fan club to move to an island with no broadband. Facebook is an unethical festering tumor incompatible with good conscience.

an alt-FB or a group of companies that comprise the same functions could emerge that rely on small payments, but the first step is those with content must be willing to try new business models, and not base decisions on self-fulfilling prophecies like "people won't pay".
