Have learnt this the hard way. Any kind of creative/unconventional things are hard to get done when ur constantly worried abt paying ur bills or trying hard not to be broke.
Skin in the game works best with a margin of safety. Skin in the game without a safety net = survival mode. With no margin for error, you must avoid the downside. Skin in the game plus a safety net = creative mode. With daily needs covered, you can work to capture the upside.

There's a lot of truth to this, but some personalities do best without a safety net. When one is satisfied with the bare minimum, sometimes you need both a stick and a carrot to perform.

What do you mean by skin in the game? I see it more as a moral code. E.g. if you say someone should put half of their net worth to gold, you should also do that. Or as a politician if you want to start a war, you should be exposed at least as much as everyone else. No safety nets

I don't think it is in any way mutually exclusive with personal downside risk protection. One can go all-in or half-in to something as long he/she is not harming others. I prefer to be paranoid with downside protection.
