Poor Border, retiring just when it really starts to get interesting. I’m sure it would have a nice Beckett quote for us all.

Good. Pieces of paper are more advanced technology than anything electronic, in this case.

Agreed. There is a difference between these messages: "Big strike!" (✓—it is indeed a big strike) "I will try to be cheerful while doing a big strike!" (✓—what else can you do?) "I am cheerful that there is a big strike!" (✗—strikes are bad: that's the point of strikes)

The "24" on that adult cinema () is a thing of great beauty. Slightly modified Westminster, I think.

I reckon and should add another three strike days utterly at random and blame "human error". Seems only fair.

Another 14 days of are imminent. This is the signal for those who cannot strike and/or can afford to to donate to the fighting funds: both central and branch level.

This is probably a good time to announce that Version 3 of the Strike Handbook is up now. As ever, PDF at

...This has so far drawn a "Yes, this would be nice to have", a "That sounds potentially fraught", and more than one "For the love of God don't do this: there is absolutely no way to handle it that would not draw enough ire and retribution to burn your world to the ground"

Today's minor irritation which I have decided to blame for the English national condition is: the fact there's a section in the called "International foods". They're all international and have been since the 19th century. Where did you think Fray Bentos was, Shropshire?

prompted by a kind email: reminder to academics that if ur using a colleague's work on your syllabus/reading list, then let them know! Esp. if they are ECRs, this is evidence of the 'impact' of their work and can be important in promotion/hiring decisions etc.

...Would really need some positive show of enthusiasm for doing this, as I suspect any such chart, howsoever carefully executed, could potentially be the gateway to a WORLD OF PAIN.

There are eleventy quillion candidates for NEC this year. Question: would it be appreciated if I tried to do a Helpful Chart of candidate positions strictly confined to self-descriptions, maybe plus unarguable info like whether people are fixed-term?

True. However, from the 1920s to early 70s the word "Manchester" could not be used on the BBC, as it was considered commercial advertising for the Port of Manchester – hence the widespread alternative "Chesney McChitty the Mystery City", which still survives in parts of Burnage.

Most people are debating whether the man has simply taken a funny turn or discovered the joys of grift, but there is a third possibility: he is in a hostage situation. If so, perhaps he has misunderstood the "duress signal" concept and thinks you have to use the word "duress"?:
