  17. (9/10): Dad (far right) in Long Binh, few months before Tet Offensive, shortly before return home. Military reunions weren't celebratory in public then. Existed no "surprise reveals" during this unpopular war. Policy debates, thankfully, now separate from our view of warfighters.

  18. (8/10): Dad returned late '67. Anti-War Movement picking up steam. Returning soldiers removed uniforms on flights home to less-than-warm reception. Dad's route home: Saigon-Okinawa-Hawaii-SanFran-JFK airport. Our family met him at JFK. It was public. To us kids, he was stranger.

  19. (7/10): For those who bristle at my suggestion, spent my 2-year old birthday on Long Island w/my young mother & infant sister, while my father was in Vietnam. Didn't "know" him. He was but a few written words my mother read to me from his letters home. She also showed us photos.
