Elites traditionally use rules of etiquette to differentiate themselves from the masses and maintain the status quo. This generation's rules of etiquette is political correctness and college is their finishing school.

Political Correctness was never like this. It was moral equivalence. These youngsters have been marinated in self-hatred and anti-western mania. They literally do not believe our society has any value. This is new.

I wouldn't argue that rules of etiquette can function in this way. Your tweet is phrased, however, to imply that this is their primary purpose, and that those who use them this way do so with that intent. I'd argue that etiquette rules evolve to serve a many of useful functions.

I'd furthermore add that, while political correctness IS primarily a status-signalling device, "preserving the status quo" isn't part of it.

The amusing thing about this is this has been the function of etiquette throughout history. Our modern elites are little different than feudal aristocrats trying to insulate themselves from the commoners.https://twitter.com/jamesadamore/status/1096078653694332929?s=21 …

Pretty much. Manners were use to tell the “well bred” people from the riff raff.

Often the very young, the untravelled, the naive, the unsophisticated deplore these formalities as "empty," "meaningless," or "dishonest," and scorn to use them. No matter how "pure" their motives, they thereby throw sand into machinery that does not work too well at best. -RAH
