I'd like to think that I notice things that others don't, but that's sometimes to my detriment ;). To concentrate at work, I listen to white noise.

Have boys changed or has our environment changed? Maybe the autistic personality type makes for good hunters and not for modern life. My husband finds that being in the wilderness is the only time he can truly relax.

I´m the same. I go fishing alone, mind u im terrible at fishing and rarely catch anything. I "fish" mostly because standing in the middle of the river without a rod would look weird haha. Nothing is more relaxing than listening to the birds chirp and the current flowing.

No. Most people have neural mechanisms which filter out unnecessary environmental information. Hypersensitivity means that you can't do that completely, and that extra information causes sensory stress.

20 years ago, people were like “what’s autism.” Today, I have family members being mindful of the environment is too jarring for my little one. Also helps me understand my own sensitivities.

I wear Bose noise-canceling over-ear cans, w/Hearos Xtreme earplugs within, plus brown noise on iDream on my phone via Bose connector. (I have the older QC15s.) (I find pink and white noise too sharp, but brown noise covered up a bit by earplugs really helps.)

I hope I'm not making light of this, but it reminded me of this scene from Man of Steel:https://youtu.be/BRfpZD2ggx0
