Looks like I am not the only one looking for another solution now that I can't upload original quality pics for free any longer.

I would gladly pay to be able to backup original files through the API.

Finally someone said it! I wanted to create a local backup just days ago and i was finding this to be such a problematic thing. There isn't even a multi select button :/pic.twitter.com/MgpIGANWrh

Use Google Takeout for that https://takeout.google.com/settings/takeout …. I do not have problems with it. AFAIK Exif metadata stays on the files, the one they came with, not applicable to other metadata you added on Google Photos (eg: Location).

Google consumer-facing APIs in general are awful or non-existent. This includes Android where there once was a vision of a rich public intent ecosystem.

Ha or like their billing API which has poor documentation, it exists, but good luck on figuring out how to use it for your specific needs without a lot of trial and error and googling. Sad when SO is a better source of documentation than Google's Docs.

Not just quality. All location/GPS data attached with the photos will be removed and there is simply no way to access it. https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/80379228

Not removed, just stored securely. ;)
